Live Classroom On-line Learning Protocol

Ironwood Institute acknowledge that the change to on-line learning platform is a difficult time for all of us. Our top priority remains the health, safety and well-being of our students and staff community. During this period, all courses offered at Ironwood Institute are being shifted to flexible online mode until further notice.

It is important that ALL participants abide by Ironwood’s Student Code of Conduct. Any breech will be reported and actioned.


Expected behaviour of the students

These protocols are to ensure everyone is acknowledged, that the attendance role is correct and to be polite and respectful of your teacher and your classmates.

  • Come to sessions understanding that not all students will adapt to the new environment the same way. You should display a respectful attitude to all attendees and allow time for all members to participate. Cyberbullying will not be accepted in any form.
  • JOIN the meeting. DO NOT START a meeting.
  • Be punctual. It is rude to make the rest of the class wait.
  • When you join the class, turn your camera and microphone on and say hello. You may turn your camera and microphone on and off during the class to participate in the conversation.
  • When your trainer asks a question reply! Either verbally or by typing in the chat.
  • When the session finishes, say goodbye (verbally or type in chat).
  • If you are unwell or otherwise unable to attend class, email your trainer to advise.
  • Use breaks to be productive and remember you trainer is available 9 to 5 on your scheduled timetable days.
  • Recordings of online sessions are for the class participants only. They may not be shared or used for any other purpose.
  • You have to participate and interact in the online meetings. Not just login but engaging in discussions so the trainer is aware of your attendance. No participation, no attendance.
  • You will have to demonstrate participation in activities.
  • One-on-one online meetings will be scheduled each week to discuss your individual and personal issues regarding studies.


What the students can expect from the Institute

The trainer will:

  • Complete the roll at the beginning and at the end of each lesson.
  • Be available during scheduled timetable session.
  • Keep reminding students they can make online appointments or face to face during the scheduled half day session.
  • Ensure students are engaged through purposeful design of activities that target outcomes.
  • Manage student behaviour in the online classroom space.
  • Have students submit an item of work during/ at the end of each lesson.
  • Advise the Head of Academics if there is a pattern of a student not being engaged in or absent from learning.
  • All communications and subsequent actions around student concerns will be logged.
  • Contact administration to troubleshoot any IT technical difficulties.

Live Classroom On-line Learning Frequently Asked Questions

How are we going to teach you:
Microsoft Teams it the tool to deliver all courses in an online mode until it is announced as SAFE by Australian Government authorities to resume face to face training. You will be able to participate in all the training and assessment sessions totally online and from anywhere in the world. That being said, if you are currently interstate or overseas, please be mindful of the time zones to participate in the live training sessions. We acknowledge that online training may be very new to some of our students, however I would like to assure you that your Trainer will provide you with step by step guidance to navigate online training landscape. So how do I get Microsoft Teams to get ready for my online classes:
It is really easy, click on the following link and follow the instructions: https://teams.microsoft.com/downloads Microsoft Teams is made available to you free of charge and is part of the Office 365 suite. You can download and install Microsoft Teams on your laptops, PC, tablets or smartphones and access by using your newly created Ironwood email account. You will receive information about your new Ironwood email account on your email address registered with us.


So how is it going to work:
Each of your subject/unit in this Term will become an online Team/class and you will have access to the learning and assessment resources as per the instructions email from your Trainer.


Will my course/program change:
No, your current program will stay as it is. There may be some slight adjustments to individual units containing practical elements but that is about it.


So how will I get to my classes:
All you will need to do is to login into MICROSOFT TEAMS on your device (laptops, PC, tablets or smartphone) on your class days as per your trainers email, and click on the link that will appear into each of your classes. When you click on this link you will be taken to your class, and your Trainer will be ready to greet you via chat/video. If you cannot click the link at the time the delivery is being done, you can access a recording and catch up on any activities.


Will my assessments/assignments change:
Probably yes, but we are ensuring that this change is minimal and does not disadvantage you. You will have access to the material and learning guides as usual, but these will be sent to you to be used on electronic format for each of your units. If the unit has quizzes or tests you DO NOT have to come to the campus, everything will be done online.
